Tom O'Sullivan, PhD

Dr. O’Sullivan is a 2001 graduate of Victor J. Andrew High School. As a University of Notre Dame Frank M. Freimann Collegiate Professor of Biomedical Electronics, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Director of Postdoctoral Studies, he has taught over 500 undergraduate students, mentored PhDs, and contributed to millions of dollars in research grants. Through the College of Engineering’s Biomedical Photonics Laboratory, the O’Sullivan Research Group strives to improve medical care, particularly cancer care, with advanced imaging technologies. Based on visible and near-infrared light, these imaging and sensing approaches are safe, noninvasive, and quantitative. He is also co-founder of two medical technology companies based on his research: NearWave, which is developing a noninvasive imaging device for breast cancer, and VisiLocate, which is developing a surgeon guidance tool for cancer surgeries. He has received multiple local and international awards for his teaching and research and continues to be involved in the local community as an electrical engineering consultant for the Village of Tinley Park Public Works. Dr. O’Sullivan earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University and a master’s degree from Stanford University, as well as a PhD from Stanford University.
