After graduating Carl Sandburg High Schoolc, David Gibson earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he was an outstanding athlete for the wrestling squad taking second place in the Big Ten in 1961, first place in 1962 and third place in 1963. Gibson continued his wrestling career and won Midwest Olympic Trial Champion title followed by taking third place in the Olympic Trial Finals.
He continued his education by receiving a Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering at Purdue. He then served in the U.S. Army and received an Army Commendation Medal and National Defense Service Ribbon.
In 1969, Gibson took a teaching position with Montana State University where he would spend the remainder of his professional career. He was a teacher, dean, and President of Montana State University Foundation while at MSU.
