Carolyn Ganser

When Carolyn “Carie” Ganser attended Andrew High School, there were no athletic programs available for students in Special Education, but that didn’t stop her from becoming an accomplished athlete. After discovering the Orland Park Special Recreation Volleyball League, Carie’s love of sports and confidence flourished as she went on to compete in Special Olympics events including track, basketball, powerlifting, and more, earning over 100 medals-many of them gold. Her leadership extended beyond athletics as she became a Global Messenger and the first athlete to serve on the Special Olympics Illinois Board of Directors, delivering speeches, media interviews, and inspiring countless others. In 2002, she served as honorary coach for the Chicago Bears, performing the coin toss and representing Special Olympics on a national stage. For 28 years, Carie has also been a beloved Jewel-Osco employee, known for her warmth and positivity. Through her determination, joy, and advocacy, Carie continues to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
