Once graduated from Sandburg, Capuano bravely served his community as a firefighter his entire career. He began his career with the Palos Fire Protection District and went through the fire academy and EMT training/certification while working. He then went on to serve the Village of Lemont as a firefighter, after which he moved to the Chicago Fire Department for fifteen years. Capuano also served the Village of Evergreen Park for more than 16 years as a part-time firefighter.
In service of the community at large, he made the ultimate sacrifice for others and perished in the line of duty on December 14, 2015. In nominating Dan, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago wrote, "Dan is deserving of this recognition not for any one act of bravery, but because of his lifetime of service."
