In service of the community at large, he made the ultimate sacrifice for others and perished in the line of duty in December 2015. In nominating Dan, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago wrote, “Dan is deserving of this recognition not for any one act of bravery, but because of his lifetime of service. Service that is not about the large, the public, or the spectacular; but service that is about the small acts of kindness, being there for a stranger on their worst day, or professional compassion to the dying and the family of the deceased.”

Piotr Dollar
Piotr Dollar graduated from Stagg High School in 1998 as the class valedictorian. He graduated from Harvard University Cum Laude with both a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Masters of Science Degree in Computer Science, and then traveled across the country to the University of California where he graduated in 2007 with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Computer Science. Cassandra Moran

Sandburg High School Class of 1979 graduate, Cassandra Moran, graduated from Georgetown University and studied at the University of Leningrad. She used her knowledge of Russia to create educational travel programs for Smithsonian Associates, Stanford alumnae and other groups, leading tours through the Soviet Union. Back at home she served as Executive Director of the Palos-Orland Conservation Committee, won awards for her work as a journalist, and helped save historic buildings from demolition in her new hometown of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.  She continued to serve her communities with tenacity, as a single mother following the death of her husband.

Mike Navarro

Mike Navarro, Sandburg class of 1969, excelled in football, wrestling and track, including taking second place in State for wrestling. He continued playing football on a scholarship at the University of Illinois where he also completed his teaching degree. After suffering a career ending knee injury, he remained at the university to complete his degree and is currently ranked 32 in all-time rushing yardage for the Illini. He returned to Sandburg for a 30 year career as a teacher and coach where he is lauded for his fairness, honesty, expectations, and successes in the classroom and as a coach. His commitment to his students and to Sandburg High School will be honored in the fall when Sandburg’s football field is named in his honor.

Heather Terry
Heather Terry, a 1997 graduate of Andrew High School, was an accomplished musician as a student. Upon graduation, she headed to Valparaiso University and then on to New York City to pursue a career as an actress where she performed on Broadway.  Her career took a detour when she channeled her artistry into co-founding NibMor Chocolates Terry, a multi-million dollar company with its organic chocolates sold in more than 4,000 stores nationwide. She holds an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, is a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and studied chocolate making at The International Culinary Center, where she is now pursuing Pastry Arts. Her first book, ‘From Broadway to Wall Street: Cautionary Tales of an Unlikely Entrepreneur’ hit bookshelves November 2015.

Jill Wrobel
Jill Wrobel, a 1998 graduate of Carl Sandburg High School, has used the grit she learned as an Eagle to propel herself as a Division 1 basketball player at the University of Evansville, Indiana, as a Cum Laude graduate with a double major in Math and Finance from the University of Illinois, and as a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, passing all 10 actuarial exams. She serves as Vice President HR M&A at Walgreens Boots Alliance, a Fortune 35 company and actively serves others through a number of nonprofit and religious organizations. Her true grit was evidenced when doctors found a cancerous tumor in her eye while she was pregnant with her first son and she made the decision to have her eye removed.
